My name is Shirley Chapman LMFTA, RN
My background was in nursing before I became a marriage and family therapist through Antioch University. My passion is helping couples and individuals see themselves differently and recognize their strengths and goodness. As an Emotionally Focused Therapist, I specialize in understanding and transforming the core emotions that drive conflict and distance in relationships. This approach, deeply rooted in attachment theory, fosters trust, empathy, and emotional responsiveness between partners. By helping individuals or couples to identify, understand, and transform these underlying emotions, EFT strengthens bonds and creates a safe space for vulnerability. The effectiveness of EFT is consistently demonstrated in studies, making it a highly reliable method for resolving surface problems and the deeper emotional patterns that cause distress.
Throughout our sessions, Shirley showed genuine empathy and understanding. This made it easier for me to open up and share my experiences. I highly recommend Shirley to anyone seeking a therapist who truly cares about their well-being and is dedicated to helping them achieve their therapeutic goals.

My husband and I feel an indescribable gratefulness for the hope, support, and healing Shirley extended to us as we learned new ways of viewing ourselves and each other. She helped us, with careful monitoring, to revisit our past traumas to allow healing with safety and without further trauma.

Her calm, compassionate, and caring approach to therapy created a safe and nurturing space for me to explore my thoughts and emotions. She listened attentively and worked collaboratively to tailor her approach to my needs and concerns.

My wife and I both felt Shirley’s nursing background helped us feel safe working through our trauma and address the grief and loss that we both were experiencing. From the first session on, she made us feel emotionally connected and gave us the support and insights we needed. Most importantly, this seemed to be not just a job for her, it seemed to be her passion. She made us feel like family or what family should feel like, it made a big difference for us!

Life is full of challenges and can often feel overwhelming.
Individual counseling can be a safe haven to navigate challenging issues and relationships. As well as a time for self-discovery and increased compassion to find the balance, peace, and confidence missing in your life. When working with individuals who have experienced trauma, I incorporate the theory of Internal Family Systems. This approach offers an understanding of people’s different ‘parts,’ often representing conflicting emotions, beliefs, or behaviors that can cause inner turmoil. IFS provides a compassionate framework to explore and address these parts without judgment, fostering self-awareness and inner peace. By connecting with your core 'Self'—the calm, compassionate center within—IFS empowers you to heal emotional wounds, resolve internal conflicts, and create lasting personal growth and balance. I will also introduce cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This highly effective model addresses the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It operates on the principle that distorted or negative thought patterns lead to emotional distress and maladaptive behaviors. By identifying these unhelpful thoughts, CBT helps individuals challenge and reframe them into more balanced and realistic perspectives. This, in turn, reduces negative emotions like anxiety, depression, and anger and promotes healthier behaviors.
