Reasons Couples Seek Therapy:
Reasons Parents Seek Therapy:
Reasons Individuals Seek Therapy:
My name is Shirley Chapman (LMFTA, RN) and my background was in nursing before I became a marriage and family therapist through Antioch University. My passion is helping couples and individuals see themselves differently and recognize their strengths and goodness.
As an Emotionally Focused Therapist, I specialize in understanding and transforming the core emotions that drive conflict and distance in relationships, in families, and oneself. This approach, deeply rooted in attachment theory, fosters trust, empathy, and emotional responsiveness not only between partners but also within oneself. By helping individuals, couples, or families identify, understand, and transform these underlying emotions, EFT strengthens bonds and creates a safe space for vulnerability. The effectiveness of EFT is consistently demonstrated in studies, making it a highly reliable method for resolving surface problems and the deeper emotional patterns that cause distress.
Feeling stuck or overwhelmed—whether as a couple, a parent, or an individual—can be challenging. You don’t have to navigate it alone. Therapy offers a supportive space to explore your experiences, gain clarity, and work toward meaningful change.
Struggles in relationships or within yourself don’t mean something is wrong with you. Seeking support isn’t a sign of failure—it’s an act of courage. We all face difficulties, not because we are broken, but because we are human, and how we see ourselves shapes how we connect with others. Therapy isn’t about fixing you; it’s about understanding who you are, exploring new perspectives, and embracing your worth.
As a therapist, my aim is to provide a warm and supportive environment where you feel heard and understood. Every person’s journey is unique, and therapy is a space to explore what matters most to you at your own pace.
Therapy provides a space to understand each other better and work through patterns of conflict or emotional distance. Together, we’ll explore the underlying emotions and dynamics affecting your connection and look at ways to improve communication and rebuild trust. Whether navigating ongoing challenges or simply feeling disconnected, therapy can provide a space for reflection, learning, and growth.
Therapy offers support in managing the emotional challenges of raising children while also taking care of yourself. Parenting can bring up stress, self-doubt, and overwhelming emotions, making it difficult to respond with patience and emotional responsiveness. In therapy, we can explore how past experiences, personal triggers, and relationship dynamics influence your parenting style and identify ways to strengthen your connection with your child, partner, or spouse while managing stress more effectively.
Therapy is an opportunity for self-exploration and personal growth. Whether you’re facing anxiety, relationship difficulties, or significant life transitions, we can work together to explore the patterns and emotions that may be impacting your well-being. Therapy offers a space to reflect, gain insight, and consider new ways to navigate life’s challenges.

Therapy is a collaborative process where we explore your concerns, patterns, and strengths to support meaningful change and deeper connection in your relationships and with yourself. Research supports clients who commit to at least 2-3 months (approximately 12 hours) of therapy sessions gain more than those who do less than that. Although, I am happy to work with clients as long as it feels beneficial to the client. We’ll check in regularly about what’s feeling helpful.
In our first session, we will spend time getting to know each other. I’ll ask about what’s bringing you in, and together we’ll clarify your hopes for therapy.
I work directly with individuals, couples, parents, and adult siblings or relationships with a parent(s) and adult child..
Appointment times are individual to your needs, whether 50 min weekly, bi-weekly, and/or intensives for people when appropriate for their relationship.
